How has ISM benefitted Victoria Avelar?

"I have learned how to communicate effectively and public speaking. I'm not afraid to speak in front of a large group of people and I enjoy giving presentations. I also still try to be as on time as possible for appointments or interviews, as that is so important when you get into college and future jobs. Overall, ISM taught me the little efforts that most people overlook. I truly value people's time and want to pay them the respect they deserve because we are all very busy! Also, learning how to just work and manage my time on my own."

What was a challenge they faced and overcame?

"I became a mom after my freshman year (surprise Mr. Pirtle!) and this was by far the most difficult time in my life. I had just started my very first semester, so add that on top of a major life change! However, I had a really strong support system at my school and even earned a scholarship for the following year. I also had my family who still very much support me and my daughter. Learning how to really manage my time was the most important and still is while I'm in school, but I overcame this only through the grace of God. I haven't graduated yet, but I know that when I do it's all going to be worth it even if I had to make some sacrifices along the way. I've learned to be more compassionate with others because we are all on this journey called life, and are doing our best to figure it out! Being a mom and a full-time student is hard, but it's not impossible and I wouldn't change any part of my story because God has made me the person I am today!"

Advice

"Pick a topic you are truly interested in and could have fun with. You have high school and college to discover new passions and be able to chase after them! Don't fall into the pressure of picking a super "hard" topic, but pick a topic that you will enjoy learning about and can have a good time presenting."

Mentorship Contribution

"I got to shadow him in the OR and actually see what he and his team did in surgeries. He was very funny and I also got to eat lunch with the staff! He truly made my ISM experience great and I loved learning from all the different staff members. He taught me a lot about overcoming adversity and "planning the work and working the plan."
