How has ISM benefitted Ioanna Stavrou?
"Professionally, ISM has helped me learn what I am truly capable of at such a young age and has given me so many opportunities and opened so many doors for me. Personally, ISM showed me how hard I can push myself and challenged me throughout the year to get out of my comfort zone, keep growing as a student, and keep working toward my aspirations and dreams of becoming a Dermatologist."
What was a challenge they faced and overcame?
" My ISM experience was very unique especially because I was a part of the first ISM class at Memorial and it was only 9 students in my class, which made us all super close. Everyone had successes in getting interviews and having possible mentors, however, I was having difficulty finding Dermatologists willing to even interview with me. Despite my endless effort of making 30 phone calls a day, and even visiting some clinics in person in the Frisco/Plano area, it didn't work out for me. Once I branched out to Dallas, I had better luck and ended up talking to a Dermatologist who was super kind, open-minded, and dedicated to becoming my mentor for ISM. By mid-December, I had secured my mentorship and began the rest of my journey in ISM which was honestly spectacular."
Advice
"In general, I would tell ISM students to keep trying no matter how many failures they have because everything will eventually fall into place if you put the effort into it. Another thing is to make sure to manage your time wisely because your stress level will increase drastically if you do not use your time wisely and ISM is stressful enough as it is. Specifically for students who want to pursue Dermatology, I would have to say that Dermatology is a difficult field to find a mentor in, so go into your research knowing what kind of subspecialty you are most intrigued by and try to find Dermatologists that way first. However, if you don't have any luck, consider looking at all Dermatologists as a whole or branching out to a farther area because at the end of the day, the drive is worth it. "

About Dr. Kingston
"Dr. Adean Kingston is a board-certified Dermatologist in Dallas who has over 15 years of industry experience and specialty training in Dermatology."
Mentorship Contribution
"Dr. Kingston was so invested throughout my ISM journey and really helped me explore the whole field very well. She gave me feedback and her input on my original work and final product as well. She connected me with a few incredible Dermatologists specializing in different areas of Dermatology. She made me realize that dermatology is the right career for me and the one that I will be pursuing; I am still continuing my shadowing experience outside of ISM and I am enjoying it more and more every time I go back to shadow."
